150 Homes for 150 years: A Peabody housing competition
Thu 10 May '12 - Sat 9 Jun '12

NLA, The Building Centre 26 Store Street London WC1E 7BT

In celebration of its 150th anniversary, Peabody launched an architectural competition to develop a proposal for an exemplar housing development of approximately 150 affordable and market homes on a four-acre site in Plaistow, Newham.
All sizes and types of practices, including collaborations, and students, were invited to enter, and competitors were asked to provide outline designs for the estate and to demonstrate how their designs aim to take the ‘Peabody estate typology’ forward into the future. The focus of the competition was the '21st Century Peabody Vision', in particular the relationship between buildings and the open spaces around them.
All designs were expected to be deliverable and the winner will be commissioned to develop the design to a full planning application.
All 20 of the shortlisted and winning schemes are on display in this exhibition at the NLA from 9 May to 9 June.
Peabody is one of London’s oldest and largest housing associations, and provides homes for nearly 50,000 people in London. Founded in 1862 by George Peabody, its mission is as relevant today as it was then: to make London a city of opportunity for all by ensuring as many people as possible have a good home, a real sense of purpose and a strong feeling of belonging.
